College students will now have representation in Austin’s city government following the creation of the College Student Commission during Thursday’s City Council meeting. The commission will serve as an advisory board to City Council on issues affecting the quality of life for college students in Austin. The 15-member board will consist of student representatives from The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, St. Edward’s University, Concordia University and Huston-Tillotson University. In order to create the commission, City Council waived Austin citizenship requirements and attendance standards for eligible board or commission appointment. Commissioners will be appointed for a term of up to two years. Alex Meed, a student at UT, said commission’s creation provided an important step for student representation in Austin’s government. District 4 Council Member Greg Casar said it was positive for students to participate in the local government. District 8 Council Member Ellen Troxclair, the lone "no" vote for the commission, said the city already had over 60 boards and commissions and opposed creating another one. However, Troxclair said she supported students participating in existing boards and commissions.
