The New Central Library's Oct. 28 grand opening will bring another piece of infrastructure online—the Second Street bridge. The new bridge will offer a connection from downtown Austin to the forthcoming flagship public library as well as the city's Seaholm District.
Transecting Shoal Creek and stretching Second west to West Avenue, the $23 million bridge will be available to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Known as a “butterfly” bridge because its arches fan out like wings, the 250-foot bridge will be complemented by sidewalks.
The city will begin moving books and other materials to the New Central Library, 710 W. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, on Aug. 14, and customers will have limited access to the books at the Faulk Central Library, which the facility is set to replace as the city's flagship public library, from Aug. 14-Sept. 15.
During that time, library customers will be able to use the Faulk facility to do the following:
- access the first and second floors of the collection;
- pick up holds;
- use public computers;
- use Wi-Fi;
- access the book drop;
- request interlibrary loans; and
- access the reference desk.
Faulk Central Library will close Sept. 16. Library materials scheduled for pickup at the Faulk facility will be rerouted to the Carver Branch, 1161 Angelina St., Austin, until the New Central Library opens.
Another infrastructural improvement ahead of the New Central Library opening was the extension of West Avenue to West Cesar Chavez Street. The extended roadway opened for use on Friday.
