East Austin's Givens Pool will remain closed this year as the city makes repairs to several cracks that leaked more than 50,000 gallons of water per day. An April 4 preliminary report shows that cracks in the wall and slab of the mechanical room at the city facility appear to be caused by foundation movement. The report was cited in a staff memo to Austin City Council. Preliminary recommendations include sealing all cracks and joints of both sides of the floor and walls. Additional work would entail identifying and repairing all other leaks in the pool system to reduce further foundation movement and pressure on the pool walls, according to the recommendations. All improvements to the facility would be funded by the November 2012 bond and are slated to be completed ahead of the 2018 swim season. In 2012, voters approved a $306.6 million bond for various capital improvements at the city. The repairs will essentially deplete funds allotted for Austin Parks and Recreation Department upgrades, according to the memo. "The Parks and Recreation Department acknowledges that these repairs will encumber the majority of what is remaining of the 2012 Bond funding and future bond dollars are unknown," the April 7 memo from acting department director Kimberly McNeeley states. "These repairs will leave the department with little funds for any future repairs for the 2018 season."
