Mother's Day in Austin will be observed with more than just brunch and mimosas. Local groups are set to rally Sunday in protest of the state's recently signed sanctuary city law.

The rally takes place Sunday from noon-2 p.m. Beginning at Austin City Hall, 301 W. Second St., Austin, the march will end at the Governor's Mansion, 1010 Colorado St., Austin.

The organizations coordinating the event include Education Austin, a union for employees at Austin ISD;  Grassroots Leadership; Inmigrantes Unidos; United We Dream; University Leadership Initiative; and the Workers Defense Project.

Montserrat Garibay, vice president of Education Austin, said the groups are asking participants to wear red.

Signed into law Sunday, May 7, Senate Bill 4, which has also been called the "show me your papers bill," will allow police officers to question individuals on their immigration status without making an arrest. It will take effect Sept. 1.

Reached by phone Thursday, an Austin Police Department spokesperson was retrieving details on what, if any, traffic advisories there will be on Sunday. APD officers will be present to direct traffic and protect rally participants.

There did not appear to be counter-protests organized at the time of writing.
