Every year, sales at Hang Ups Picture Framing and Photo Printing have grown 15%-20%, owner Ursula Overdiek said, a trend she hopes to continue.

This January, Hang Ups marks its 10-year anniversary. Overdiek said she plans to upgrade the store’s frame collection, be more intentional about marketing and update the webpage.

Hang Ups is a picture frame shop that specializes in custom picture framing in a variety of sizes as well as photo restoration and printing.

Originally from Germany, Overdiek has been in the photo framing business since 2000, when she opened her first Hang Ups location in Lakeway. Starting with no knowledge of photo framing, Overdiek took classes, went to trade shows and read books to get better at the art.

Overdiek said framing has to be done correctly or the art will be destroyed.

“I try to listen to the story of the customer—what do they want to express?” she said. “Because a frame changes the expression of the artwork.”

Customers love that employees at Hang Ups care and take everyone’s story seriously, Overdiek said.

In the near future, Overdiek seeks to retire, but she wants Hang Ups to continue operating. She said one of her goals in the next few years is to find someone who can take over operations. Until then, Overdiek will continue serving customers.

“We care and listen—if it’s important to you; it’s important to us,” she said. “Everybody has a right to put their own story on the wall. ... It’s furniture for the wall.”

Techniques at Hang Ups
