Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority leaders voiced frustration during a Feb. 26 board meeting over the lack of a clear deadline to open 183A Toll extension from Leander to Liberty Hill originally proposed for early 2025.

Current situation

Lane Construction Co., the project's contractor, anticipates completion by the end of March, but Mobility Authority board member David Singleton thinks differently.

“I'm done listening to their projections,” Singleton said. “... I don't think it's the end of March because I'm out there every day.”

He explained that the board needed to be informed for financial planning, as delays have cost the Mobility Authority $115 million in out-of-pocket expenses, or liquidated damages.

“Now we’re bleeding,” Singleton said.

What we know

Local transportation officials have dubbed the extension of 183A Toll lanes a “proactive congestion relief” project. The $259 million expansion aims to alleviate traffic and provide a more reliable transportation option.

Mike Sexton, the Mobility Authority's director of engineering, provided project updates based on reports from Lane Construction.

Crews are supposedly working on the final rounds of work, Sexton told board members, including:
  • Paving under Hwy. 29
  • Installing tolling cameras
  • Smoothing of the roadway to remove bumps
  • Lane painting and stripping
He noted that February's progress was slowed by icy weather but has since picked up pace.
