Cedar Park took a step toward renovating and expanding pools in the city April 10.

City Council authorized the city manager to negotiate a $1.05 million professional services agreement with Kimley-Horn and Associates for engineering services related to the Veterans Memorial Pool expansion and Milburn Pool Renovation.

Two-minute impact

The Veterans Memorial Pool expansion is expected to expand the existing pool to potentially include a lazy river with a lounge area, according to agenda documents. Additionally, an interactive play area for children, waterslides, shade areas, cabanas and more could be included in the expansion.

The Milburn Pool portion of the agreement is to develop concept drawings and engineering cost estimates. According to agenda documents, proposed improvements include renovating the pool house, HVAC system, staff break room, restrooms, offices and more.

The Milburn water playscape and slide were also recommended to be replaced, according to the documents.

What they’re saying

“I’m excited that we’re here, because this is, again, one of those bond projects that you can wait in perpetuity, and here we are designing, so that’s very exciting,” council member Anne Duffy said.

She noted people in a nearby neighborhood were concerned about possible traffic implications as the pools are already popular. City staff said they would look into the situation.

What else?

Funding for the engineering services comes from a 2022 bond and community development corporation Type B funds, according to the documents.
