Cedar Park City Council voted to ban the installation or use of the social media app TikTok on devices owned or leased by the city at its Nov. 14 meeting.

The move follows requirements from Texas Senate Bill 1893 that government entities implement policies prohibiting employees from installing or using the app on city devices, according to agenda documents.

The city implemented the policy by adding to its human resources manual, but there are exemptions to the ban that allow use of the app for law enforcement or information security purposes, according to the documents. In those cases, the department head must document measures taken to mitigate any potential surveillance risks posed to the state of Texas by their use of the app.

The ban also covers any app owned by TikTok’s parent company, Bytedance, and leaves room for more apps to be banned at the discretion of the governor.
