Cedar Park City Council reviewed proposed speed limit changes, largely comprising decreases in speed, in the city at its Oct. 3 meeting.

The roads with proposed changes are:
  • Anderson Mill Road
  • US 183/Bell Boulevard
  • FM 1431/Whitestone Boulevard
  • FM 734/Parmer Lane
  • Ronald Reagan Boulevard
Speed limits are reviewed periodically to account for new roadway construction, adjacent development and changes in driver behavior, according to the agenda item.

The Texas Department of Transportation recommends using the 85th percentile speed, or the speed at which 85% of drivers drive at or below, on a given roadway in considering the recommended speed limit. City documents show the recommendations were based on current data.

The breakdown

After review, speed limits on Anderson Mill Road were largely recommended to remain the same. However, from Lime Creek Road to Gaspar Bend and from Gaspar Bend to the quarry entrance, a speed limit increase from 40 mph to 45 mph has been proposed, according to the agenda.

On Whitestone Boulevard, various changes were recommended, including:
  • A decrease from 60 mph to 55 mph from Sam Bass Road to Cottonwood Creek Boulevard
  • A decrease from 50 mph to 45 mph from Cottonwood Creek Boulevard to Anderson Mill Road
Recommended changes on Bell Boulevard include:
  • An increase from 45 mph to 50 mph from Avery Ranch Road to Lakeline Boulevard (southbound only)
  • A decrease from 55 mph to 50 mph from Avery Ranch Road to Cypress Creek Road
  • A decrease from 50 mph to 45 mph from Cypress Creek Road to Buttercup Creek Boulevard
Recommended changes on Parmer Lane include:
  • A decrease from 65 mph to 55 mph from Brushy Creek Bridge to FM 1431
Recommended changes on Ronald Reagan Boulevard include:
  • A decrease from 65 mph to 55 mph from FM 1431 to North City Limit
There will be a second reading of the proposed changes Oct. 24.

Quote of note

“I’m very happy to see the speed limits dropping, because safety is a huge priority for me, as it is I think for the whole council,” Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin said.
