This summer, Leander ISD is providing students with breakfast and lunch meals at no cost.

The district’s free summer meal service began June 3 and runs until July 26 at select campuses.

The setup

Free meals are available to children ages 18 and younger or students with disabilities up to 21 years old from June 3-28 and July 8-26, according to district information.

Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m., and lunch will be served from noon-1 p.m. at the following campuses:
  • Giddens Elementary School
  • Cedar Park Middle School
  • Leander High School
The district will host kick-off parties at those campuses from noon-1 p.m. on June 6. The event will include free books and door prizes.

Quote of note

“When the school year ends, children often lose access to consistent, nutritious school meals,” Upenda Sibley, LISD child nutrition services director, said in a district news release. “This summer meals program helps ensure children in our community have healthy meal options and return to school ready to learn.”

The background

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program is administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture. The TDA helps organizations such as LISD serve free meals when over 50% of children in an area are eligible for reduced-price or free meals, according to district information.
