Students in Leander ISD must now register for transportation services to ride the bus next school year.

New and returning bus riders must submit their registration by June 14 to receive transportation on the first day of school, according to district information.

What you need to know

For the 2024-25 school year, the district will only create bus routes for students who are registered to receive transportation services. Previously, LISD established routes based on how many students in the district were eligible to ride the bus.

According to district information, the change is intended to make bus routes more efficient by doing the following:
  • Reducing overcrowding on buses by identifying when they are reaching capacity
  • Establishing more accurate bus stops based on students who are actually riding the bus
  • Improving security by ensuring only approved students are riding the bus
Families can click here to determine if their students are eligible for bus services and register them through a district form by June 14. Special education students can be registered for bus services through a separate form if they are determined to be eligible by their Admission, Review and Dismissal committee, according to district information.
In case you missed it

LISD has faced bus driver shortages in recent school years, and the district had 50 vacant bus driver positions ahead of the 2023-24 school year, according to previous reporting by Community Impact. The district changed its bell schedule to reduce the number of bus routes needed, and has continued to recruit drivers through job fairs and other means.

Throughout the 2023-24 school year, turnover among transportation staff reduced to 10% compared to almost 40% in the 2022-23 school year, district officials said at an April 11 board of trustees meeting.

In April, the district installed new camera systems in 187 buses, featuring 360-degree, backup and side camera views as well as improved sound clarity, Assistant Director of Transportation Ken Turner said.
