From colorful murals decorating the walls and straw trimming outlining Indian agriculture throughout the restaurant, Suprabhat transports customers to India with its traditional dishes and atmosphere.

The backstory

The restaurant has been serving vegetarian cuisine since 2013. Owner Chenchu Krishnan took over the business in 2021 after working in the hotel industry and looking to grow his passion for providing the right food for the right palette.

Krishnan began searching for the perfect chef to run the kitchen, and found Anil Bashyam, a chef with robust experience in the hotel industry.

On the menu

Bashyam personally designed the restaurant’s menu, which specializes in vegetarian and vegan offerings. The business does not use any eggs, meat, artificial flavors or colors in its products, as stated on its website.

The menu features cuisine from Uttar Thali, or Northern India, and Dakshin Thali, or Southern India.

Customers make the drive to Northwest Austin to indulge in the restaurant’s meals, Krishnan said.

“We get a lot of customers from the Dallas and Houston area whenever they are in this part of the state,” Krishnan said. “Most of the customers travel from downtown to here for dinner and I asked them, ‘What made you travel 30 minutes for me?’ and they said ‘It is the only food we enjoy.’”

Krishnan said dosas, an entree similar to a crepe, are the most ordered menu item. He recommends new customers try navratan korma, a Mughlai curry dish made with nuts, seeds and vegetables and served with garlic naan.

What else?

The business offers catering and private event services. The restaurant is accommodating to customers with food allergies as well as diners with disabilities, Krishnan said.

Krishnan said the restaurant hosts regular customers who have adopted the eatery as a place to spend time with loved ones and celebrate milestones.

“We have people who come and spend time with their families on the weekdays, weekends and especially during birthdays and anniversaries,” Krishnan said. “They will say, ‘Hey, today is my mother’s birthday and she wants to come over here.’”

Bashyam makes a great effort to connect with customers, as well. When prepping for catering events, he records his cooking to share with the client and takes photos throughout the event to share with them.

“For me it's not about the money,” Bashyam said. “It is about the food and the people I am serving. I want them to enjoy the food.”
