Mark and Kim Gaddy greeted customers and made deals early Friday evening at their longtime Pflugerville business. That isn’t different than most Fridays, other than this will be their last Friday in business. Gaddy’s Feed, a fixture in the community since 1973, will close Sunday. The shelves showed signs of a business going out of business, much to the surprise of customers, who came in and made deals beyond the 40-50 percent off signs. A post on the Gaddy website said higher taxes, operating costs and development codes have hindered the ability for the family-owned company to stay in business. The post said the family understands the changes are part of growth. “We appreciate serving the Pflugerville community for 45 years now,” Kim Gaddy said at the store Friday. “We were proud to keep it going into the second generation. We’re excited to see Pflugerville grow into a vibrant community.” Among the favorites of customers over the years, Gaddy’s offered baby chicks in the spring and fall, Texas-made Victor dog food, pasture-raised beef from store founder Frank Gaddy and Purina food for a variety of animals. The store started as a blacksmith and then added hardware, trees and different kinds of feed. In April 2017, Gaddy’s Feed began growing organic vegetables on the property behind the store at 403 FM 685. Fresh squash, carrots, onions, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs were sold inside the store. For the second generation of Gaddys to run the business, saying good bye will be tough. “So many friends and loyal customers,” Kim Gaddy said, while Mark Gaddy referred to customers as his social network. “We have enjoyed our employees, especially Rodney Vander Laan, who was with us 19 years,” Kim Gaddy said. “He was family, a Gaddy. Many were and we appreciate the support we’ve had here.”
