Al Kinser spent 40 years working at his family’s golf course, Butler Park Pitch and Putt in downtown Ausin, where he said he learned all he knows about hard work, running a business and landscaping.
“If you want to succeed, the best way to do it is a lot of hard work and many long hours,” Kinser said. “I’ve seen this is the best way to succeed instead of waiting around for someone to give [success] to me.”
Kinser was 10 years old when he began working at the golf course, and his first job was mowing the grass. Eventually he became responsible for maintaining and irrigating the landscape.
“The grass and the landscaping has to be superior on a golf course,” Kinser said. “[I learned about] which types of plants need which kind of materials.”
Today, Kinser uses that knowledge to run his business, Kinser Ranch, alongside his wife, Robin, and son Winston. Since 1998 the ranch has offered firewood and organic landscaping supplies, which Kinser said is healthier for plants.
“The organic products work better than the artificial products because of the way they are made,” Kinser said. “They are natural.”
Creating the mulch takes one year and involves grinding or shredding the brush, watering and turning it approximately seven times, which Kinser said produces natural heat of approximately 180 degrees from the microrganisms found in the material, to kill any pathogens or seeds.
“There can be detrimental things in [the mulch] like oak wilt or weeds,” Kinser said. “When it’s all been cooked for so long, those things die.”
Kinser said the ranch gets brush deliveries daily.

“I love taking something that is someone else’s trash and turning it into someone else’s treasure,” Kinser said. “All these things people are trying to get to rid of … I feel like I’m really doing something that is beneficial for the people and the environment.
Kinser said another aspect that makes his business unique is the customer service and unbeatable prices.
