If there is a design, flavor or price a customer is looking for regarding a dessert, wholesale bakery The Cake Plate owner Scott Calvert said his team can get it done.

“We once designed a groom’s cake that was 12 feet wide by 12 feet long, featuring the Baylor bear [mascot] in the center of [the university’s] McLane Stadium—jumbotron and all,” he said.

As a wholesale business, the bakery does not have a storefront open to the public, so all orders are communicated by telephone or email.

When Calvert began his wholesale pastry business as Countryside Baking Co. in Bastrop in 1996, he said the bakery strictly focused on creating wedding cakes. However, he later changed the business’s name to The Cake Plate, and its clientele grew. In 2002, the business moved to Westlake’s Cuernavaca Drive.

“Our clients were in the area, so it made sense to be where they were,” Calvert said of the relocation.

For wedding and specialty cakes, the bakery staff meets weekly with customers to provide cake flavor tastings and samples, he said. The most popular cake flavor is the company’s signature Mexican Vanilla, which features cake layers soaked in vanilla bean syrup, he said. Other popular flavors include salted caramel cake and tiramisu, he said.

The Cake Plate recently partnered with bakery Tootie Pie Co. to sell baked goods online. Calvert said he noticed a similarity between his products and Tootie Pie’s, and he was able to connect to their established online sales platform to sell cakes, such as Pecan Porter Chocolate Praline Cake, red velvet cake and Italian cream cake, across the country, he said.

Although cake is the mainstay for The Cake Plate, the company’s team also creates detailed designs on cookies and cookie arrangements for business clients or showers, Calvert said.

The price range for the bakery’s goods depends on the design and time needed to create the product, he said.

“We spend every day sending proposals and try to get back to them as quickly as possible,” Director of Operations and Finance Stacie Bryan said. “If [our clients] can dream it, we can do it.”
