The Buda Drug Store & Soda Fountain was opened a decade ago by owner and pharmacist Tammy Gray, a Buda resident who previously owned two pharmacies in Austin. She decided to sell them after she grew tired of the commute, and she opened a pharmacy in Buda.
When the business first opened, it was the second pharmacy in the area, preceded only by HEB. Now, there are 13 other chain pharmacies in Kyle and Buda. But Buda Drug Store & Soda Fountain remains the only locally owned independent pharmacy in the area, Gray said.

The store offers prescriptions as well as ice cream, sodas, coffee, toys and other items.
“Our products are all the same as the chains carry. Service is where we can make the difference,” Gray said. “We try to make it a personal experience, and that’s where we’re able to make the differences and stay in business.”
Two years into operating the pharmacy in Buda, the space next door became available, and Gray decided to expand.
“I always had a dream of opening an old-fashioned soda fountain,” she said.
Soda fountains were common in pharmacies years ago, but have become less common in more recent times, Gray said.
“I thought it would be a neat thing for the community,” Gray said. “The older citizens in the community really enjoy coming in and sharing memories of when they were children, going to the drug store and having coke floats and ice cream treats.”
For the whole week of June 20 through the 25, Buda Drug Store & Soda Fountain will offer 50-cent single-scoop ice cream cones, as well as 25 percent off all ice cream treats, gifts and candy as a way to say thank you to their customers for a decade of business.
“We feel like we’re an integral part of the community,” Gray said. “We know people’s names when they walk in the door.”

NOW OPEN—A new boutique, O’Neill House of Fashion, opened June 9.
“We will cater to college students and women who want to be just as fashionable as when they were younger,” said owner Melinda O’Neill.
The original store is in Gruene, O’Neill said. The San Marcos location offers clothing, shoes and accessories. In the future, O’Neill plans to expand the store and also offer swimwear.
O’Neill shops for the items she sells exclusively in Los Angeles.
“I think that’s where all the great fashion is. Everyone follows it. Why not bring it here?” O’Neill said. “I handpick everything and make sure I get quality clothing at affordable prices.
O’Neill House of Fashion is open 11-6 every day except Sunday. O’Neill said. Once the boutique builds up a clientele, the hours will probably expand, she said.

COMING SOON—The people behind Shine On Yoga, a new yoga studio coming to San Marcos this summer, hope to take a slightly different approach than what people would expect from a yoga studio, Studio Manager Kathryn Zollars said.
“We really believe the benefits of yoga should be accessible to everyone,” Zollars said.
The studio, located at 200 Springtown Way, Suite 318, will feature two rooms with 1,500 square feet of practice space and offer heated and non-heated classes tailored to children, athletes and senior citizens.
Zollars said they are on track to open the first week of August, when classes will start right off the bat. The summer schedule for classes will be released by the end of July.
