Flowers Flowers Inc.From weddings to dates to school dances, Flowers Flowers Inc. has covered the floral needs of Northwest Austin residents since 1987. Carla Kirkwood has worked at Flowers Flowers since she moved to Austin 26 years ago, and she has been an owner of the corporation for 13 years. She said many of the same customers have been coming into the shop since it opened. “All of the businesses around us have changed,” she said. “There’s been a lot of growth out here.” But Kirkwood said the demographics of the area surrounding Anderson Mill Road and US 183, which contains many single-family homes, remained the same, with new families replacing many of the older ones. Kirkwood started her career in Dodge City, Kansas, when she began working in a flower shop owned by a member of her church. “I’ve always been in the floral industry,” Kirkwood said. Flowers Flowers is a full-service florist and gift boutique, she said. “We do weddings; we do funerals; we do anything pertaining to floral,” Kirkwood said. The shop can also set up flower-deliveries nationwide through a wire service, she said. Unlike many flower delivery companies customers find online, orders through Flowers Flowers are fulfilled by other independent florists throughout the country, which means customers do not pay service fees, and the flowers are higher quality, she said. “We only carry premium flowers,” Kirkwood said. Other gifts in the shop include Christmas collectibles, jewelry and wall art. “We want people to come in here and find things they’re not finding everywhere else,” Kirkwood said. Flowers Flowers also works to give back to the community, she said. The shop partners with area high schools to donate some of the revenue from high school prom orders to Project Graduation, a program that organizes adult-supervised and alcohol-free events. Kirkwood said the days leading up to Mother’s Day are an extremely popular time to buy flowers. For Mother’s Day orders, she recommends visiting the shop a week in advance. Kirkwood said her mother once told her son that picking up flowers with a carton of milk at a grocery store is a lot different than having a bouquet personally delivered. “It just doesn’t deliver the same sentiment,” Kirkwood said. “And [my mother]’s lived 80 years, so I think she knows what she’s talking about.”
