The salon at 5601 Manchaca Road opened Jan. 22 and is a renovation of the school’s cosmetology classroom, which is almost as old as the 1968 school itself, Academic Director Sissy Camacho said. The school spent $350,000 from the Austin ISD 2013 bond for the salon upgrade, installing new furniture, stations and equipment.
“With these new renovations, it looks like one of the upscale salons in the Austin area,” Camacho said.
Crockett students who complete the school’s cosmetology program earn enough hours required to take the Texas Cosmetology License exam, Camacho said. Nearly 100 percent of the students who graduate from the program pass the exam, she added.

NOW OPEN: Style Encore, a store that sells and buys used casual and business clothing for women age 25 and older, opened Jan. 21 on South Lamar Boulevard, the second location in Austin. Austinite Amy Chung, who owns the South Lamar Style Encore, said she previously opened a Plato’s Closet, which is similar in concept to Style Encore but caters to 14-24-year-old teenagers and women.
“With Style Encore, we wanted to have a store for women in their mid-careers to be able to purchase clothes at great prices,” Chung said.
