Tom and Lara Ruthven are parlaying a lifelong love of athletics into a local enterprise they said they hope will help people lead active lifestyles.

The Ruthvens began Austin Multi-Sport in June 2013. The business offers gear and other retail items for swimming, cycling and running, and the Ruthvens offer triathlon training as well as suspension training, a type of exercise using body-weight resistance.

Tom said the business is cultivating a reputation for providing cycling expertise.

"I think we have one of the finest repair and service shops for bikes in all of Central Texas," Tom said.

Austin Multi-Sport offers services for cyclists ranging from those who enjoy riding as a pastime to those who compete in Ironman competitions.

The shops bike-fitting service accommodates different kinds of bicycles, such as youth, mountain, road bikes and commuter bicycles, Tom said.

"If youre just starting for the first time or youre an experienced rider, having the bike fit properly is very important, and were very good at that," he said.

Tom and his staff are available to offer advice to customers who have mechanical issues or technical questions about the performance of their bicycle, he said.

Lacking the technical knowledge required to maintain a bicycle can often make cycling less enjoyable, Tom said.

"A lot of [repairs], they just come in, and its an easy fix," he said. "You teach them a couple of quick tips in the parking lot, and theyre much happier when theyre out doing their own thing."

Running shoes and gear for swimming and triathlonssuch as wet suits, goggles and triathlon swimsuitsare also offered.

Initially the business was more tailored to competitive athletes, but Tom said he gets the most enjoyment out of promoting a healthy way of living.

Its about getting an individual healthy and active, he said.

Tom said Austin Multi-Sport has high expectations for 2015. The business plans to focus on getting the word out about its offerings to increase its clientele.

Plans in the new year include offering a broader array of bikes, including more family-oriented bicycles.

The business will continue adding to its selection and is looking for a site to host youth triathlon training sessions, he said.

That's where we are headed, Tom said. 2015 will be a good year.
