Community and family members, along with Wiliard’s fellow Windsor residents, shared stories of Willard and well-wishes for her throughout the event.
Social worker Melanie Smith said she has known Willard for over 25 years and is thankful for their long-term relationship.
“When I first met her, she ran a cafe called Ruby’s Lounge and was a very independent lady,” Smith said, adding that Willard has always had a lot of love—with a side of cheekiness—for everyone she meets.
Willard’s great-great-nephew, 18-year-old Demarqs Ockelberry, said he was happy to join everyone in commemorating her birthday.
"I can't even word how awesome this is," Ockelberry said. "She's still sassy, and she's still got that spunk in her."What else?
Windsor Admissions Coordinator Amber Robinson said a host of area business owners also stepped up to help facilitate the party—from decorations to the program design, tables and chairs, cookies, and a specially made cake.
Bastrop Mayor Lyle Nelson presented a proclamation, declaring Feb. 21, 2024, Ruby Willard Day, noting that Willard loves her sweets and beauty naps, and “still enjoys playing jokes on the staff at the nursing home and rehabilitation center.”
Additionally, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent Willard a letter congratulating her on 107 years, which was presented to the family during the celebration.Taking a step back
Born the same year as Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne and John F. Kennedy, Willard was an entrepreneur before her health prevented her from continuing her endeavors, which included working as a private home health worker in addition to her club and restaurant in Shiloh.
“She has never been the type of woman to sit back and wait for somebody to get something done; she would always just get out there and do it herself,” Smith said.
Other significant events the year Willard was born include:
- The first Pulitzer Prizes are awarded.
- The United States declared war on Germany, entering World War I.
- The Uncle Sam “I Want You” poster is created.
- The Espionage Act was passed.
