Kiwanis, a volunteer organization dedicated to strengthening communities and helping children, now has a chapter in Bastrop. Kiwanis clubs initiate programs such as Key Club, Builders Club and K-Kids to teach children leadership and development at all ages.

Bastrop's Kiwanis club will meet on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Bastrop ISD Office, 906 Farm St., to initiate service projects, organize student clubs and plan social events.

As of the group's Sept. 11 meeting, the first service project will be assembling packed meal bags for Bastrop Food Pantry's Nibbles Emergency Food and Assistance program.

The club will have its first social at 6 p.m. Oct. 23. A location is still to be determined.

The details

Kiwanis club members sponsor over 150,000 community service projects every year. These projects include building playgrounds, restocking libraries, providing school supplies and more. Bastrop's Kiwanis group will choose its service projects based off the needs of the local community.

“I am thrilled to be part of the organization of the Bastrop County Kiwanis Club,” Bastrop Kiwanis club President Zia Lowe said. “This Kiwanis club will promote youth leadership and service by partnering with the school districts as well as other nonprofit organizations to create leadership programs and organizing service projects. This club is focused on service to our community and our future leaders.”
