Bastrop County residents have voiced health and environmental concerns regarding the installation of a rock and cement crusher within Travis Materials' mining facility.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will hold an informational hearing from 7-9 p.m. March 7.

The FM 969 and Wilbarger Bend Road area has seen three new sand and gravel mines in the past two years.

How we got here

Travis Materials filed an air permit request for a rock and cement crusher off FM 969 in July.

Among other groups, local farmland preservation organization Friends of the Land has voiced concerns regarding the installation of a crusher. On Dec. 12, the city of Bastrop passed a resolution calling for the review of the proposed crushing plant, citing environmental risks and traffic impacts as the source of concerns.

Public written comments regarding the application can be submitted throughout the public comment period of the meeting or mailed, as formal comments will not be taken at the meeting.

Written comments should be addressed to the Office of the Chief Clerk, MC-105, P.O. Box 13087, Austin, TX 78711-3087. Members of the public can also submit a comment electronically here.
