A show-and-tell, poetry reading and mechanical history tour will be held in honor of Texas Independence Day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 2. The event will be free to the public.

Readings of Texas poetry performed in period clothing will take place at the Bastrop Museum and Visitors Center.

Bastrop poet Carolyn Banks, former Bastrop council member Dock Jackson and Bastrop Mayor Pro Tem John Kirkland will also speak at the event.

“We have put together a schedule of activities for that day that the whole family can enjoy,” said Nicole DeGuzman, executive director of the Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center.

What to expect

Bastrop resident John Lockwood will read from his 1897 copy of "Pilgrim's Progress" as part of the show-and-tell presentation.

Inspired by "Antiques Roadshow," the show-and-tell event will feature family heirlooms from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Guests are invited to bring their own artifacts and share.

Presentations will take place at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The mechanical history tour of the museum's historic 109-year-old fire truck will be held in the museum's Special Exhibition Room.

"We're thrilled to offer a Texas Independence Day experience that celebrates our rich heritage through engaging activities," DeGuzman said. "The combination of poetry, history and community participation creates a unique and memorable event for all ages.”
