Newly opened Abuelitos Crêpe Café offers sweet and savory crepes made with fresh, local ingredients. This weekend, the truck will be serving attendees at the Oct. 6 First Friday Artwalk and Market Days on Main Street Oct. 7.

Now a retired airplane mechanic, owner Rafael Morales and his wife, Maria, moved to Bastrop last year to be close to their family. This Saturday, Oct. 7 marks the couple’s third week open at Chestnut Grove Food Truck Court.

The backstory

According to Rafael, the name Abuelitos comes from his grandchildren’s pronunciation of “abuelos.”

“We thought of different names, but the one that would always come back is Abuelitos because the kids would always come over and say, ‘Can you make us some crepes,’” Maria said.

Rafael began making crepes while he and his wife were living in Mexico City. The couple opened a coffee shop and started making crepes based on a friend's recipe. Over the years, the recipe has changed, developing into what Abuelitos Crêpe Café sells today.

The recipe

Rafael uses organic flour, olive oil and 100% milk in his crepes. The food truck now offers gluten-free crepes for an extra $2.

“Everything that I use when I cook is good quality,” Rafael said. “What we enjoy is that when [customers] eat [our food], they savor it.”

Visit on Saturdays to enjoy Abuelitos’ Smoked Love crepe special that includes barbecue from a neighboring food truck.

“Everything we make is from scratch,” Rafael said.

Abuelitos' meat and eggs come from local growers. Maria said she and her husband wanted to make healthy food they would be happy to feed to their grandchildren.

“We just like having these principles for ourselves and for our family, and the community is an extended form of the families,” Maria said.

Abuelitos is one of eight food trucks located in Chestnut Grove Food Truck Court. Most of the food trucks are owned by local Bastropians.
