Mike’s Bikes will be among Fisherman’s Park's latest offerings.

The business, which will operate out of a renovated 1967 Airstream Land Yacht, will fill the need for a local bicycle repair shop in Bastrop. It will offer bicycle rentals with safety equipment for $15 per hour and $50 per day.

Jason Hernandez, the owner, named Mike’s Bikes after his son and said he is excited to open his business later this summer after more than a year of planning and construction.

“It’s been a wild and rewarding journey, full of lessons in patience, faith and perseverance,” Hernandez, a Cedar Creek resident, said in a statement posted to his website. “We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve the Bastrop County community, and we look forward to what's ahead.”

What we know

His location is near the basketball court and the restrooms at Fisherman’s Park.

Bastrop City Council approved the lease agreement with Mike’s Bikes for the 400-square-foot location at 400 Farm St. in Bastrop during a July 2024 meeting, after Hernandez initially expressed interest in opening his business along Main Street.

“Unfortunately, with our building code rules and space required, we couldn't find a space that worked on Main Street,” Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino said during the meeting. “Alternatively, we looked at our parks and recreation system and determined that Fisherman’s Park was probably a more suitable place and an area of need if we are trying to encourage that type of mobility.”

The lease agreement, for $125 per month, totals $1,500 annually, according to city documents.

The approach

Hernandez previously emphasized how bicycle rentals would be limited, as the primary goal of his business is to provide repairs and “give-back initiatives”—such as those through partnerships with the Parks and Recreation Department and his local church—for the community.

“It won’t be a fleet of 100. It’ll be a fleet of four to 10 max,” he said. “Rentals will be grown to scale as needed.”

Several Bastrop residents are excited for Mike's Bikes to open, including council member Cynthia Meyer.

“To give back to the community is just what it’s about, so I commend you so much, and to have more recreation and exercise for the people in this city would be amazing,” she told Hernandez during the July 2024 meeting. “As a cyclist who has nowhere to take her bike to be repaired, thank goodness.”
