As Gulf Coast residents brace for Hurricane Beryl, Bastrop County nonprofit Texas Firewalkers is gearing up to assist those who have or will be affected.

The cause

Created by Blake “PeeWee” Henson in 2008 following a fire in his home, he and his team of volunteers assist Texans by cooking and serving hot meals on-site after a disaster.

"Although I was grateful to be alive, having basic necessities such as shelter, food, and toiletries available to me would have made the days following my loss easier to bear," Henson said.

How to help

Funded entirely on donations, the Texas Firewalkers team urges community members to lend a hand.

Monetary donations can be made through the nonprofit's Paypal fundraiser website.

Other ways to help include attending fundraising events at the Firewalker Ranch, 3004 S. Hwy. 304 in Rosanky.

Upcoming fundraisers include:
  • Catfish Frydays, held each Friday from 3-9 p.m.
  • Rosanky Market Days, held on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Live music events, like the upcoming Preachers of Hell County show on Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.
Quote of note

"Unfortunately as humans, we cannot prevent disasters from occurring," Hensen said. "With your help, we can relieve some of the initial emotional trauma inflicted upon Texans in need of our services."
