Bastrop County Commissioners Court approved a steering committee for the design and construction of a projected $40 million Bastrop County judicial building.

The details

The steering committee will be composed of several Bastrop County staff members, including:
  • Jennifer Pacheco, county auditor
  • Leon Scaife, purchasing agent
  • Chris Duggan, judge of the 423rd District Court
  • Benton Eskew, judge of the Bastrop County Court at Law
  • Bryan Goertz, district attorney
  • Sarah Louks, district clerk
“Now that Bastrop County owns the land that the Judicial Building will be constructed on, Bastrop County needs to start internal discussions as to what the form and function of this building will need to be designed to meet,” Scaife said in a staff report.

During a meeting Aug. 11, Precinct 2 Commissioner Clara Beckett called it “critical” to also include security personnel.

“I just think any elected official or department head who’s going to have staff within that building needs to be on it so they can provide input,” she said.

Some context

Bastrop County previously outlined the need for a new judicial building in response to a growing demand for services of the district courts, district attorney and district clerk—all of whom are currently located in and around the courthouse annex.

“Construction of this new building, on a site located away from the courthouse, will free up parking spaces for the courthouse complex,” according to the latest Capital Improvement Plan for Bastrop County. “Construction of this building should allow for some increased efficiency in work function as well as the ability to share some common spaces such as meeting, training, storage and other space.”

A new judicial building is one of several projects Bastrop County is working on to enhance services for a growing population, as a facility for its Development Services could break ground in January 2026, Lyndsey Schroeder, executive assistant to Bastrop County Judge Gregory Klaus, told Community Impact on Aug. 7.

Bastrop County officials did not respond to Community Impact’s request regarding where the Bastrop County judicial building will be located by press time.
