Gov. Greg Abbott approved a $17.3 million grant to support Elon Musk with the expansion of his Space Exploration Technologies Corporation semiconductor research and development and advanced packaging facility in Bastrop.

Two-minute impact

According to a March 12 news release from Abbott, the expansion is expected to create more than 400 jobs and generate $280 million in capital investment.

“We love Texas,” Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer said in the release. “SpaceX is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into our Bastrop facility.”

The details

Over the next three years, SpaceX officials plan to add 1 million square feet to the facility, which will continue its focus on producing components for its global broadband service, Starlink.

“This investment is a game changer for Bastrop and for Texas,” Rep. Stan Gerdes, R-Smithville said. “With hundreds of new jobs and a stronger domestic supply chain, this project is a huge win for our economy, our workforce and our future.”

When completed, the Bastrop spot will become the largest printed circuit board and panel level packaging facility in North America, per the release.

Some context

The grant is funded by the 2023 Texas Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors Act, which aims to enhance the state’s semiconductor research, design and manufacturing, as previously reported by Community Impact.
