Plans for additional paved parking near the Bastrop County Courthouse are underway, with construction expected to start in mid-2025.

Some context

Part of the county’s Capital Improvement Plan, officials approved $1.5 million to upgrade parking lots throughout the area to keep up with the growing population and aging infrastructure.

According to the CIP, the existing parking lots are no longer adequate to serve the growing needs of Bastrop County.

The details

The paved lot will be nestled along the 800 block of Walnut Street, across from the courthouse.

Leon Scaife, director of purchasing for the county, said plans are in the beginning stages.

“I am working on the request for engineering qualifications document now, and we probably won’t have an engineer under contract before November,” he said. “After that, the hired firm will probably take three to five months to design and prepare all the documents for construction and permitting.”

Scaife said he expects construction bids to go out in April and construction to begin around May or June.

Director of General Services Shawn Harris said the engineering firm will determine the number of parking spaces.
