Residents living within the Bastrop city limits will notice a change to their trash and recycling collection services, including a new company, bins and pickup days.

The new agreement with Texas Disposal Systems starts Sept. 1, following the end of the city's contract with Waste Management.

What you need to know

During the transition, residents should leave their WM bins outside on their regularly scheduled pickup day.

"Waste Management will pick up the old bins, and Texas Disposal Systems should drop off the new bins around the same time," said Colin Guerra, Bastrop public information manager.

Guerra said one thing to note is that the bins from TDS are taller and skinnier, so although they may look like they are not as large as the WM bins, they hold the same amount.

Something to note

Bulk trash pickup is limited to 4 cubic yards, and is available every other week on trash collection day. Acceptable bulk items can include discarded materials, such as:
  • Furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Carpets
  • Lawn equipment drained of oil and gas
  • Large appliances; however, any freon must be drained and tagged by a licensed technician
  • Yard trimmings in bags or bundles; however, officials noted that residents should not stack piles against fences, homes, vehicles, near mailboxes or meters, or on roadways.
TDS does not accept paint, batteries, dirt, concrete or tires, according to the website.

What else?

Recycling is also available and will happen every other week on the regularly scheduled pickup day.

Items that can be recycled include:
  • Aluminum beverage containers and cans
  • Cardboard
  • Glass bottles, jars and jugs
  • Paper
  • Plastic bottles, caps and jugs
  • Mail
  • Medicine bottles
  • Body wash, shampoo and conditioner bottles
What's different?

TDS is only closed for three holidays each year, including New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day—when scheduled pickups will be pushed forward one day after the normal collection day.
