Bastrop Public Library will kick off its annual summer reading program on May 27 with a new theme: Color Our World.

In a nutshell

In a news release, library director and program supervisor Bonnie Pierson said the initiative runs through July 26, and aims to engage readers of all ages with creative and educational activities while promoting literacy and community.

What’s offered

This year’s program emphasizes the connection between reading and creativity, encouraging participants to explore various forms of art, including painting, woodworking, photography, and textile crafts.
  • Reading challenges: Open to all age groups. Participants are encouraged to read 500 minutes over the summer to earn a free book and enter prize drawings.
  • Live performances: The Ramazinis Circus and the Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show will host free shows at the Bastrop Convention Center on June 24 and July 22, respectively.
  • Bilingual programming: Bilingual Storytime and Platica con Cafecito will alternate on Thursdays, with one week offering stories in English and Spanish and the next offering time for children to play while parents chat.
  • Weekly storytimes: Scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m., featuring books, songs and crafts.
  • Adult craft groups: Sewing, quilting, knitting and general crafting sessions will take place weekly and monthly.
  • Educational talks and Gardening classes: A local history talk is scheduled for June 7 at 1 p.m., and a xeriscaping workshop with a local nursery is set for June 5 at 7 p.m.
