The time pets spend in shelters can be incredibly stressful, resulting in unusual behaviors and an increased chance of illness, according to the Animal Humane Society.

To help ease some of this, officials with the Bastrop Public Library and Bastrop County Animal Services will partner on Sept. 28 to create a pawsitive experience for shelter pets, as well as those wanting to work on their literacy.

Some context

Lillian Hibbert, public services lead for the library, said the team came up with the idea for Read With Kittens after brainstorming ways to create a connection between community members while also shining a light on shelter pets in need of adoption.

The details

Hibbert said animal services officials will turn shelter kittens loose inside the conference room at the library. Those visiting can grab a book and a kitten and read them a story.

"Part of the function of this event is that we encourage them to read aloud to the kittens out of the book they’ve chosen," Hibbert said. "It’s good literacy practice for them, and good socialization for the kittens."

While people of all ages are welcome, Hibbert said small children should be monitored.

Notable quote

"Come practice your reading with a nonjudgmental furry friend," Hibbert said. "All kittens will be available for adoption through Bastrop County Animal Services after they have been spayed or neutered."
