Bastrop ISD students will soon be able to work with Walgreens to receive their pharmacy technician certifications.

A closer look

Due to an agreement approved by the board of trustees at a Nov. 19 meeting, students working to receive pharmacy technician certifications will be able to complete internship hours at both Walgreens locations in Bastrop.

According to Dr. Amanda Brantley, BISD director of college, career and military readiness, the partnership can accommodate up to 60 students per year. In the 2024-25 school year, 12 are anticipated to take part in the program. In the 2025-26 school year, the program is expected to double with 24 students participating and grow an additional 10 students in subsequent years.

The partnership agreement will be upheld for three years, according to agenda documents.

The background

The program is offered through the district's Career and Technical Education, or CTE, program. CTE courses allow students to explore potential careers through work-based learning experiences, industry-based certification completion and student organizations. Other CTE courses offered in BISD include Animal Sciences, Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems, Carpentry and Construction, and Digital Communications.
