With a 14-foot-tall squirrel statue and a wide array of options for pecan enthusiasts, Berdoll Pecan Candy & Gift Company attracts customers from far and wide while maintaining a personal connection with locals in the Cedar Creek community.

A family affair

Co-owner Jennifer Wammack has been involved in the company since her parents first started selling pecans from their orchard about 45 years ago. When the business started, Wammack’s parents sold pecans by placing signs along Highway 71 that stated customers could buy the nuts three miles down the dirt road to the orchard.

“My mom would weigh them up into five and 10 pound bags for customers out of the garage,” Wammack said. “That’s kind of where it all started just by customer demand and requests and now we have grown and grown.”

In December 2008, Wammack and her husband purchased the business from her parents. The business has since grown into a favorite beyond the local community with worldwide shipping, a large retail store, selling products in H-E-B, Buc-ee’s and other mom and pop shops, Wammack said.

What’s special about it?

The shop sells three different varieties of pecans and 20 different flavors including honey glazed, pecan brittle, mesquite barbecue and jalapeño. Additionally, the shop is well-known for its pecan pies which come in four different options.

Wammack said the classic pecan pie is so popular that it is sold in the pecan vending machine located outside the storefront. During the holiday season, the pie has to be restocked at midnight everyday, as stated on its website.

Quote of note

“We have customers that have been with us from the beginning,” Wammack said. “That’s one of our favorite parts of our small business is hearing the stories of customers that come in and say, ‘We remember when you were at the corner of Hwy. 71'...We’re just really appreciative of the local support.”
