According to unofficial results, John Cyrier will be the next House District 17 representative after defeating Brent Golemon in a runoff for the seat. HD 17 includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Gonzales, Karnes and Lee counties. Cyrier received 52.06 percent of the vote for a total of 4,149 votes. Golemon received 47.93 percent of the vote for a total of 3,820 votes. The runoff election between Cyrier and Golemon was called after none of the five candidates in a Jan. 6 special election received at least a 50 percent majority of votes. Cyrier, president of Sabre Commercial, a commercial construction company, has previously served on the Caldwell County Commissioners Court. Cyrier also previously served on the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the group responsible for coordinating transportation projects in Central Texas. He said he plans to make education, transportation and water his highest priorities. HD 17 includes the area where Forestar Real Estate Group has ground leases for water, of which Hays County has received 12,000 acre-feet and is currently in litigation to obtain a reservation on an additional 33,000 acre-feet. "Water is our most precious resource," Cyrier said. "Local authority needs to decide how they're going to use that resource. This district is very fortunate because it has three of Texas' top resources, which are water and oil and gas." The HD 17 seat was formerly held by Tim Kleinschmidt, who resigned the seat in order to take a position with the Texas Department of Agriculture in late 2014. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
