Capital Metro is offering free rides after 6 p.m. July 4 for riders on its bus and rail services.

The public transit agency is trying to encourage residents to take public transit to the H-E-B Austin Symphony July 4th Concert & Fireworks show at Auditorium Shores.

Bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule, and MetroRail service will start at 4 p.m. with the last train leaving downtown Austin at midnight. The MetroRapid bus routes 801 and 803 will run until 2:30 a.m.

After the show, northbound riders will need to walk across the South First Street bridge, which will be closed to traffic, to pick up buses at Lavaca and Fourth streets. Southbound riders can take a bus along Barton Springs Road; near South Congress Avenue and Barton Springs; and on Riverside Drive near South Congress.

Several bus routes will also be affected by detours July 4. Riders may visit Capital Metro’s website for more information.

The city of Austin is also recommending residents know about their travel options before heading to any Fourth of July festivities to avoid driving buzzed or drunk.

The city’s website lists several options for residents, including taxis, ride-hailing companies or leaving vehicles parked downtown overnight.
