The term “pie in the sky” is synonymous with a fantasy or pipe dream, but the real deal is kicking off in Kyle this Labor Day weekend, the city announced Friday. As the city of Kyle seeks a trademark to become the “Pie Capital of Texas"—because of the success of local business Texas Pie Co.—it has organized a festival to celebrate the city with balloons and live music, and event organizers said they will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most people named Kyle being in one place. The inaugural Kyle Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon festival will last Sept. 1-2 at Lake Kyle. On Saturday morning balloons will be released to float over Kyle. During two “night glows,” the hot air balloons will be inflated as if they are going to take off but instead are anchored to the ground. The balloons are continually inflated with hot air and glow in the night. About 25 balloons will be part of the inaugural festival, which includes a Friday night glow, Saturday morning mass ascension of balloons and another night glow Saturday evening. Longtime balloonist Josh Sneed will serve as “Balloonmeister” and determine the safety of balloon flight based on weather.
