Major renovation will bring updated exam rooms to the CommUnityCare Rosewood-Zaragosa Health Center in East Austin as well as new space for faculty and students in the family residency medicine program at The University of Texas Dell Medical School.

The renovation will take between eight to 12 months to complete at the health center, located at 2802 Webberville Road, Austin, according to Central Health. Starting Friday, the clinic's patients will be able to visit their doctors at the Sandra Joy Anderson Community Health and Wellness Center, which is located about 1 1/2 miles from Rosewood-Zaragosa at 1705 E. 11th St.

Central Health set aside about $5 million in its 2017 capital budget to upgrade Rosewood-Zaragosa, according to Ted Burton, the agency's communications director. The total cost of the project will not be known until a contractor is selected and a request for proposals process for design and construction is complete, Burton said.

Larry Wallace, the interim president and CEO of Central Health, said his staff would be "doing everything possible to make sure" patients' heath care is not interrupted while the center is renovated. Rosewood-Zaragosa is expected to reopen in late 2017 or early 2018.

"Improvements to Rosewood-Zaragosa are a community priority," Wallace said, in a news release. "This upgrade is in response to what we heard and we are excited about the improvements despite the temporary relocation of services."

Along with the new education areas for Dell Medical School, the improvements include:

  • Expanded exam rooms with two additional spaces that will bring the total number of rooms at the clinic to 24.

  • Workflow design improvements that Central Health said will reduce wait times.

  • A new procedure room for outpatient services.

  • A renovated patient waiting area that will be equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Rosewood-Zaragosa patients can call 512-978-8400 to set up appointments with their doctors at the Sandra Joy Anderson center. Patients also have the option of receiving care at any of CommUnityCare's 21 locations in Travis County.
