Tomball Police Chief Jeff Bert is retiring from the city after six years leading the department and will take on a new role at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, according to a July 31 announcement from the Tomball Police Department.

Bert joined the city as police chief in July 2020 after retiring from the Los Angeles Police Department, where he spent 24 years in law enforcement, according to the city website.
During his time with the LAPD, Bert worked in patrol, investigations, narcotics and vice, along with several administrative roles. He later served as a police commander overseeing the department’s community policing programs, according to his city biography.
In its announcement, the Tomball Police Department credited Bert for his leadership, mentorship and commitment to both city employees and residents.
“We sincerely thank him for his leadership, mentorship and service to our community,” the department stated. “He will be greatly missed, and we wish him and his family nothing but success in this next chapter of their journey.”
What’s next
The city will begin a nationwide search for its next police chief at a later date, according to the department. Shon Davis was appointed July 31 to serve as the interim police chief. Davis previously held the position of captain of patrol.
