The city of Tomball will sell four police vehicles to Montgomery ISD’s Police Department following Tomball City Council approval at its May 4 meeting.
This is the third time the city has sold vehicles to MISD—in 2024, six vehicles were sold to the district, and in 2025, four vehicles were sold to MISD.
The discussion
The vehicles will be sold for $3,000 each for a total of $12,000, per the agenda packet.
During discussion, council member Paul Garcia asked about auctioning off some of the vehicles rather than selling them to get more money for them.
In response, Tomball Police Chief Jeffrey Bert said the department is already auctioning some of its vehicles that “are pretty rough.” When vehicles have been auctioned, the city has gotten between $4,000-$5,000 for them, Bert said.
“There may be a little more money, but I think what we’re trading ... [is] a relationship with another ISD, a fledgling school district that has a smaller police department that ... certainly puts our resources to use,” Bert said. “We know they’re being used; we’ve maintained a strong friendly relationship with that agency.”
Garcia also asked Bert what the city is receiving reciprocally, and Bert said Tomball PD discusses and works with MISD’s police department on active shooter training.
“[MISD Police] Chief [Rickey] Doerre, when he was here with us as a captain and prior, was a remarkable tactician and a very good trainer, and so we continue to use some of his guidance and expertise when it comes to working with schools,” Bert said.
Doerre spent 19 years with the Tomball PD before becoming police chief at MISD, as previously reported.
Bert also said there are plans for the two departments to engage in hands-on training during the upcoming summer months.
Following discussion, the vote to approve the agreement to sell the vehicles to MISD was unanimous.
