Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler announced an upgrade plan for signalized intersections in south Montgomery County to improve safety and speed for local roadway users, according to a news release.
The modernization project will consist of replacing older traffic light technology with advanced equipment designed by Miovision to more accurately respond to everyday traffic demands.
The local impact
The Woodlands Parkway will be the first thoroughfare to have these upgrades installed, with all signalized intersections in Montgomery County eventually being redone with the new technology, according to the release.
Why now?
The last significant upgrades to the county’s traffic signal infrastructure were implemented more than a decade ago, according to the release.
By installing Miovision’s data-collecting software, entities like Precinct 3 are able to use said data to better address current and future mobility challenges on a larger scale, according to the company’s website. Miovision, founded in 2005 and headquartered in Canada, specializes in improving traffic quality data for cities through operational systems that detect, measure and direct roadway users.
“This investment represents a major step forward in how we manage traffic throughout Precinct 3,” Wheeler said in the announcement. “By utilizing real-time data and adaptive technology, we can improve traffic flow, enhance safety and make smarter decisions about future transportation improvements.”
About the project
Here’s what improvements local residents can expect to see:
- Adaptive traffic signals and video detection to allow intersections to adjust to traffic conditions throughout the day, as opposed to fixed timing schedules: This will alleviate congestion and allow fewer stops during peak traffic hours such as school zone times, rush-hour windows, special events, accidents and construction.
- Enhanced signal responsiveness to roadway users of all types: The system is designed to detect multiple entities on the road at once, including vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit vehicles, to reduce public safety issues at intersections.
- Remote system management: The cloud-connected feature replaces traditional management methods by allowing county staff to monitor system performance and identify problems in real time, lowering the number of on-site visits.
- Long-term transportation planning through data collection: A continuous collection of traffic data informs planners of general traffic patterns and helps identify mobility problems at recurring locations.
The deployment of these systems will be achieved through federal grant funding and a partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, Precinct 3 officials confirmed.
