Township election to feature one contested race

"What are we doing with the land we have and how do we preserve the quality of life [is important], maintaining parks that we have and maintaining the recreational and green spaces," Rocha said.

McMullan said he was an early supporter of Sen. Ted Cruz, whose advice he took to heart in running for the township board of directors.

"Time and time again, I heard the senator say that if you're interested in the community, get off the couch and get engaged," McMullan said. "This is a community I love. I'm at the point in my life where I feel like I have something to offer."

He said he believes he is uniquely qualified for the position, having worked for 14 years in the private sector, running legal and human resources departments for an energy company. McMullan said he has experience managing budgets, and he believes his knowledge of the energy industry could be an asset to The Woodlands.

McMullan cited the community's quality of life and transportation concerns as top issues he hopes to address if elected.

"We need to intelligently manage our growth," he said. "I'm excited about the opportunity to serve this community, and the response I'm getting hasn't been good—it's been tremendous."

Hausman said she was astonished no one ran against her in the election. She was elected to the board in 2008 and re-elected in 2011.

"I'm shocked, and I'm humbled," Hausman said. "This is not an apathetic community. This is a vibrant community. I think they care, and I hope people think that I care."

She said she is excited to serve the community over the next two years, and she believes the board will continue to discuss the future of the The Woodlands' governance and address congested roads throughout the growing community.

Tough was also surprised to run unopposed. He was first elected to the board in 2008 and has served as the board's chairman since 2010.

The chairman said he has served the community for 14 years, and he believes the present is the most exciting time in the community's history.

"We have the most accelerated growth, the highest population and the most development," Tough said. "We're closing in on our buildout, so continuing to provide the services and infrastructure to our residents is critically important."
