One of the keys to Peace, Love and Herbs' early success, Baker said, is the personalized service he strives to provide to his customers.

"I want to be very responsive to what my clientele wants," he said. "I think they really do appreciate that, unlike a bigger chain store, someone will take personal responsibility and develop a much more personal type of relationship."

Baker said the store's location in the Village of Alden Bridge has proven to be a success thanks to the area's diversity in population.

"There is not really a store right now in this part of The Woodlands that fills this niche," he said. "A lot of [the store's clients] are not from The Woodlands; they are from other parts of the country, or others parts of the world where they have access to this sort of stuff."

One of the drivers of the industry, and someone who Baker plays close attention to, is TV personality, author and cardiac surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz.

"We do carry all the stuff he talks about," Baker said. "That does pretty well for us."
