Founded in 2021 by four college students, today Mariachi Del Bosque performs with 14 members. Often performing in The Woodlands, Mariachi Del Bosque performs at Herrera’s Mexican Restaurant once a month and performs at special events such as weddings, quinceañeras and community events.
The mariachi band won first place at the Houston Rodeo Mariachi Invitational in 2025.
When was Mariachi Del Bosque founded and how did the mariachi band come to be?
Mariachi Del Bosque was founded in 2021 by Marissa Anthony-Ruiz and Esmeralda Regalado. The group began as four college students majoring in music who simply wanted to play together and have fun doing what we loved. What started as a small side project has grown into something much bigger. We are united by discipline, culture, and a shared passion for representing our community with pride.
What inspired the name of the mariachi band?
The name Mariachi Del Bosque, bosque translating to forest in English, pays homage to where the group was founded, Huntsville, Texas, which is near Piney Woods or Sam Houston National Forest. Over time, trees and nature took on deeper meaning for us. The name represents growth, resilience and staying grounded in our cultural roots while continuing to expand and evolve.
What makes mariachi music special compared to other genres?
Mariachi is more than music, it’s storytelling and culture. It carries history, pride, love, heartbreak, celebration and identity all in one performance. The instrumentation, harmonies and emotion behind every song connect generations. It’s one of the few genres where you don’t just hear the music, you feel your heritage in every note.
4. What role does mariachi play in the local community?
Mariachi plays a vital role in preserving culture and bringing people together. We perform at weddings, quinceañeras, community events, cultural celebrations and even funerals serving as a bridge between generations. For many families, mariachi is tied to their most meaningful life moments, and we are honored to be part of those memories.
5. What has been your most memorable performance?
Winning first place at the Houston Rodeo Mariachi Invitational in 2025 was one of our most memorable moments. Being recognized at such a respected event validated the hard work, rehearsal and sacrifices behind the scenes. It was a proud moment not just for us, but for everyone who has supported Mariachi Del Bosque.
6. How do you hope to grow your presence in the local community?
We hope to continue performing at larger events, collaborating with schools by bringing mariachi education to the community. We recently launched our first mariachi camp “Mariachi del Bosque Youth Mariachi Camp” where the certified teachers and musicians of our group have been holding a camp for 9- to 17-year-old students who want to learn about mariachi folklore. We plan to expand our reach across Texas and the nation. Our goal is not just to perform, but to inspire younger musicians and represent our culture with integrity.
