The Austin Parkway and Commonwealth Boulevard intersection will soon see safety improvements following resident concerns.
In a nutshell
At an Oct. 6 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a $1.02 million construction contract with Indi Construction Partners to address congestion and safety issues at the Austin Parkway and Commonwealth Boulevard intersection.
The intersection—which currently relies on stop signs—will now receive a traffic signal and turn lanes, said Renie Deanda, director of communications and community engagement for the city of Sugar Land.
Key changes include:
Eastbound Austin Parkway will get a right turn lane
Westbound Austin Parkway will get a left turn lane
Commonwealth Boulevard’s right lane will now be a shared left and right turn lane instead of a right-only lane
The project will be funded through the Fort Bend County 2023 mobility bond, the Sugar Land 2024 general obligation bond and funding from developer Hillsboro Estates, LLC, per the agenda document.
Some context
The multi-way stop intersection has performed poorly for several years, prompting multiple resident concerns about congestion during the weekday peak periods, per agenda documents.
Looking ahead
Construction is set to begin in October with a contract time of 250 days, Deanda said.
