Missouri City officials shared an early look at its fiscal year 2026-27 budget ahead of City Manager Angel Jones upcoming July departure.
"My goal is to lay a solid foundation for my successor, give council an early understanding of the city's financial outlook and ensure sufficient time to provide direction before the budget is finalized," Jones said.
The big picture
The preliminary budget—which was presented at a June 29 special City Council meeting—showed $253.2 million in proposed expenditures and $239.7 million in proposed revenue, Assistant City Manager Bertha Alexander.
Additionally, Alexander said the preliminary budget shows a need to increase the debt service tax rate by $0.024204, bringing the total tax rate to $0.595029 as the city makes its final bond issuance of the $85.85 million bond approved by voters in November 2021.
The details
Of the $20.1 million supplemental department budget requests, the city manager has proposed $17.63 million for FY 2026-27, including:
- $5.06 million for public safety
- $3.5 million for the pavement maintenance and management program
- $800,000 for economic development
- $1.45 million for employee recruitment and retention
- $2.01 million for enhanced services due to growth
- $1.59 million for fleet and equipment replacement
- $1.57 million for information technology replacement and software
- $143,200 for contracts
- $1.5 million for repairs and maintenance
Also of noteCity officials are also proposing a $65.7 million capital improvement program for FY 2026-27 with $27.7 million in utilities projects and $18.9 million in transportation projects.
Additionally, the city has $284.2 million in funded and new requests for its five year plan.
What's next?
City staff will hold a detailed level budget workshop in August once certified tax rolls are received, although a date for the workshop is still being determined, Alexander said.
