Missouri City City Council makes way for new park with rezoning approval

A new park planned for a tract of land on the west side of Missouri City’s Quail Valley subdivision has been given the green light.

The City Council for Missouri City approved the second of two readings during its Monday, Feb. 7 meeting to rezone the 6.69-acre site from LC-2—neighborhood commercial zone—to CF, known as community facilities.

The zoning change would allow the owner of the land, Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 26, to move forward with plans to provide recreational opportunities for the district’s residents and open a new park to be known as Randy/Dee Park, said Jennifer Thomas, the city’s director of development services, during a Dec. 8 planning and zoning meeting.

The park will be located north of Court Road and the Bradford Village residential subdivision; south of the Quail Green West residential subdivision; east of Columbia Blue Drive and Fort Bend ISD's Glover Elementary School; and west of Texas Parkway and the Wells Fargo professional offices, according to a Feb. 7 agenda report.

The Missouri City City Council approved the item unanimously on Feb. 7 in its consent agenda weeks after holding a public hearing on the item on Jan. 18.

The approval means the Municipal Utility District is now able to move forward on the first two phases of its three-phase plan to redevelop the site. The first phase will include parking, a playground, a picnic area, and an 8-foot brick wall and perimeter fence, according to city documents. Construction on that phase is expected to commence over the next few months, Thomas said during the Dec. 8 planning and zoning meeting.

The second phase, meanwhile, will include ballfields, a shade structure, a walking trail, a splash pad and restrooms.

The third and final phase is the installation of a water plant. That item will require future approval of a specific-use permit.
