According to a release from officials with the city of Sugar Land, waste service delays residents may be experiencing are due to a record amount of green waste—grass clippings, leaves, brush and tree limbs—left on homeowners' curbs in the last two weeks. Typically, an average of 840 tons of green waste is picked up each month. However, more than 960 tons of green waste has been picked up in the last two weeks, according to the release. The increase is due to residents clearing out dead vegetation from this winter's freezes; increased activity related to trimming trees and brush; and faster grass growth due to recent rain and warm weather. The city's green waste service is provided weekly, and items collected are recycled into mulch or compost. Solid waste trucks are making additional stops to accommodate the excess amounts of green waste.
