The Barbara Bush Branch Library features a wide collection of books and other informational materials while offering an array of community events as part of the Harris County Public Library system. The library continually accepts volunteers to help shelve, show or place books on hold. Interested potential volunteers must fill out a form and pass a short test on the Dewey Decimal System to be considered.

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County is seeking volunteers to help with administrative duties and help out at ReStore, an outlet store for building materials. The nonprofit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International will need volunteer homebuilders in the spring when it begins construction on a new neighborhood near George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, wear closed-toed shoes and attend an orientation. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Founded in 1983 as a joint venture between 10 churches of several different denominations, Northwest Assistance Ministries offers a Family Violence Center, Fifty Plus Senior Center and a nutrition center. NAM is in need of volunteers for Meals on Wheels, its Children’s Clinic and its resale shop. NAM also seeks volunteers for instructors or bingo callers at its senior center as well as peer advocates for its family violence hotline. Volunteers younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Since 2008, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts has provided Spring and Klein residents access to original works of art. Volunteer opportunities include working as a docent: museum representatives who lead students and adults on pre-scheduled tours of the facility. Training is required to become a docent at the museum.

Spring Woodlands Ministries, a nonprofit organization that provides food to people in need, seeks volunteers to organize food or toy drives and to distribute turkeys and hams for their Christmas distribution event Dec. 12. Interested parties are also encouraged to become a monetary sponsor for its Christmas Outreach program.

YMCA locations near Spring and Klein are searching for volunteer coaches to help teach sports, such as basketball, soccer and baseball. The Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA also needs volunteers to help teenagers by serving as guest speakers or helping with tasks, such as resume building. In addition, the I-45 location also needs volunteers for its Holiday Giving Event at Thomas Wussow Park on Dec. 15. The YMCA will provide food and presents to families in need and requires volunteers to unload food, decorate, build bikes and clean up after the event ends.
