If elected, how will you remain accountable to the district’s teachers, parents and students?

My thoughts are along the lines of efficacy. I’m a critical thinker, and we want our kids to be critical thinkers. We don’t want them just to fill in the blanks, and I’m not a fill-in-the-blank board member. I’m a thorough, detailed board member and I try to make sure that the district’s resources and the taxpayer’s money [are] handled in a way of efficacy.

What makes you qualified to serve on the Spring ISD Board of Trustees?

My military career and also my involvement in the community [make me qualified]. I also worked at [SISD] as an educator at Westfield [High School]. I’ll be the only school board member [who] worked in a classroom setting in [SISD] and communicated with teachers and parents.

How should the district improve college readiness and literacy rates?

This is so important because our children are not reading at their grade level. It’s not just true here in Spring; it’s true throughout the U.S. Spring should be one of the school districts to try to address this concern. I’ll make sure our students have reading programs year-round, even in the summer months.

If elected, how will you remain accountable to the district’s teachers, parents and students?

I would organize a meeting or forum every quarter throughout the district where community leaders, parents and students can come and address their concerns. This would be a meeting outside the school board setting. Most importantly, I want to be a voice for the teachers and the students. With my time in the classroom, I can be an advocate for the teachers.

What makes you qualified to serve on the Spring ISD Board of Trustees?

I am visible and approachable in our community. I served on numerous committees before I even came on the board in 2006. My children went through the district. My company I work for has a business in the community. So I think I’m very aware of what’s going on in the community.

How should the district improve college readiness and literacy rates?

Those are two big things in my initiatives. But not all of our students are going to go on to college. We want them to be career-ready, whether they’re going straight into the military or whether they’re going straight into the workforce. We want them to be ready for any of those avenues.

If elected, how will you remain accountable to the district’s teachers, parents and students?

[I will] continue to be visible to the community. I am listening to what our parents, community partners and business community are saying. I will be prepared for our board meetings, [be] on top of what’s going on with the [TEA] and [be] very transparent with our community on what’s going on, whether it’s our test scores or finances.

What makes you qualified to serve on the Spring ISD Board of Trustees?

I have over 30 years of business experience and own my own business as an insurance financial advisor. My experience is in solving many complex issues and advising my clients’ financial needs. [My] priority will be to work collaboratively with the community, public and private sector to enhance [SISD] student success.

How should the district improve college readiness and literacy rates?

The [Texas Education Agency] makes the policies, and the district should abide by the TEA rules.

If elected, how will you remain accountable to the district’s teachers, parents and students?

[I will make] sure that decisions are made in the interest of the students and faculty and [use] the financial resources of the district in a way that is transparent with stakeholders. The future success of students in [SISD] depends on all entities working together to solve many complex issues.
